The National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) was released early last month, with much made of the record level of investment in Auckland ($7.3 billion).
While we all want to see the transport budget increased, the critical question is: what are we getting in return? And on that front, as noted above, the plan for Auckland comes up well short.
AT’s own figures show that congestion is going to get significantly worse over the remainder of the decade. In our view, that’s not a good enough result, and there’s little doubt that the majority of Aucklanders will feel the same.
Increased congestion is bad for productivity, liveability, and emissions. If Auckland is to have any hope of putting a dent in it, much more must be done to address the needs of general traffic and freight, alongside the emphasis on PT, walking and cycling.
